Football in Thailand
Football is clearly the number one sport in Thailand and the national association can look back upon a number of success stories. In 2002, the national team qualified for the finals of the Asian qualifying round for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/ Japan?, while in 1997 and 1999, the U-17 team reached the finals of the FIFA U-17 World Championship. Thailand also participated in the Olympic Games in 1956 (Melbourne) and 1968 (Mexico City). The following players and coaches have been instrumental in the development of Thai football: Chanvit Polchivin (currently national team coach), Withaya Loahakul (player for Gamba Osaka, Japan, Hertha Berlin, Germany, and now part of the national coaching set-up), Warawan Chitawanich (currently coach of the national U-17 team) and Piyapong Pue-on (Lucky Gold Star, South Korea, currently coach of the U-18 team).
