Binh Duong put Da Nang’s title celebrations on hold

THU DAU MOT – AFC Cup 2009 quarter-finalists and reigning V-League champions Binh Duong denied Da Nang the 2009 Vietnamese title with an emphatic 4-1 win at the Go Dau Stadium on Sunday.

Runaway leaders Da Nang went into the round 21 match 12 points clear of second place Song Lam Nghe An and needing a victory to seal the 2009 championship but Binh Duong were adamant not to lose the crown in front of their home fans.

Inspirational midfielder Nguyen Vu Phong opened the scoring with just two minutes on the clock and was on target again in the 35th minute, 19 minutes after Nguyen Anh Duc had made it 2-0 to Binh Duong.

Phanh Thanh Phuc’s 77th minute header reduced the deficit but any hopes of a Da Nang fight back were snuffed out when Cameroonian striker Marcelin Nkemi restored Binh Duong’s three-goal cushion.

Da Nang, V-League runners-up in 2005, will look to wrap up their first title on July 26 when they travel to Cao Lanh to take on Dong Thap while Binh Duong will be looking to maintain their fine domestic form ahead of their AFC Cup quarter-final with Thailand’s Chonburi when they entertain Khanh Hoa on the same day.
