Thais ease past under-strength Japan


HO CHI MINH CITY – Thailand opened their Asian Indoor Games fustal Group B campaign with a comfortable 4-2 win over an inexperienced Japan side at the Phu Tho Gymnasium on Thursday.

Japan coach Miguel Rodrigo opted to use the multi-sport tournament to give his younger players more international exposure as the Spanish tactician assess his options ahead of the 2010 AFC Futsal Championship qualifiers taking place in Beijing late next month.

And the Thais, runners-up to Iran at the first two Asian Indoor Games as well the 2008 AFC Futsal Championship, made there experience count scoring through Keattiyot Chalaemkhat (13th), Ekaphan Suratsawang (21st), skipper Panuwat Janta (22nd) and Suphawut Thueanklang (37th) before last minute goals form Kazunori Sugawara and Reo Yokoe gave the score line a more flattering perspective.

In Group A, defending champions Iran began their quest for hat-trick of gold medal wins with an 8-3 hammering of Turkmenistan, while in Group C hosts Vietnam were also breached eight times with ASEAN rivals Malaysia and Jordan proved too strong for Bahrain as the Hashemite Kingdom ran out 6-3 winners.

Finally in Group D Kuwait, who missed out on the a place at next year’s AFC Futsal Championship after being edged 1-0 by Lebanon in the semi-finals of the West Zone qualifiers, defeated Korea Republic 4-3.

In the women’s tournament Japan’s females fared better than their male counterparts as they defeated Uzbekistan 5-3 in three-team Group B, while in Group A hosts Vietnam went down 6-1 to Thailand, who top the table ahead of Jordan on goal difference after the side from the Middle East defeated Malaysia 5-2.
