BANGKOK: Former Sunderland and Manchester City boss Peter Reid says he is sad to be leaving Thailand but cannot wait to start work again in the Premier League after being appointed number two at Stoke City.
Reid's contract as Thailand's national coach was terminated on Wednesday after just a year.
A clause allowed him to leave if he received an offer from an English club.
"I've come to an agreement with the Thai FA," he told the Stoke City website.
"They've been very helpful and I've got a great relationship with the chairman Worawi Makudi. I would like to go on record in thanking them for everything -- being an international manager is great.
"I still have many friends there and will always look out for their results."
Thailand are next in action on November 14 when they play Singapore in AFC Asian Cup qualifying with Reid's assistant, Steve Darby, acting as coach until a new manager is officially appointed.
Charnvit Phalajivin, who quit as national coach last year and was succeeded by Reid, said Darby was a good choice to replace him full-time.
"Steve has been working with the team for one year so he should not have any problem," he told the Bangkok Post.
"We should look forward. The FAT (Football Association of Thailand) must appoint a new coach as soon as possible."
Reid's appointment at Stoke was made official almost immediately after his Thai contract was terminated, with the club's manager Tony Pulis saying he was a valuable addition to the club.
"It's great to be able to add such experience to the coaching side of the football club," he said.
Stoke currently lie fifth in the Premier League with seven points from their opening four games.
