BANGKOK - Chonburi coach Kiatisuk Senamuang admitted his side's 2-2 draw with Binh Duong in the first-leg of their AFC Cup quarter-final was not the result he was looking for but was adamant his side can finish the job in Vietnam.
Chonburi were twice forced to come from behind at Rajamangala Stadium as Huynh Quang Thanh and Nguyen Vu Phong had put the visitors in front in the first-half.
Pipob On-Mo cancelled out Quang's strike but it was Arthit Sunthornphit's 69th minute goal that ensured the Thais would head into the second-leg on level terms.
Kiatisuk, who before the game had spoken of the need for his side to establish an advantage ahead of the return fixture, conceded the outcome was not ideal but pointed to the fact his side's league campaign was a mitigating factor and underlined his confidence the Thais can beat Binh Duong on their own turf.
“We're disappointed with the result but we played our best,” he said.
“We're still playing in the Thai league and we have six more games. It's okay, we got a draw. The first-leg was very difficult and now the second game is in Vietnam, but for me, it's no problem.
“We have a chance. If we play well, we can beat them on their own field but we must build up the team to give us more confidence. But an away game we know won't be easy.”
Tempers seemed to fray a little towards the end of a hard-fought encounter but Kiatisuk insisted it was to be expected.
“All of the games in the ASEAN region are tough,” he added.
“But we respect the referee and aren't complaining.”
Binh Duong coach Mai Duc Trung, meanwhile, was optimistic about his team's prospects as they depart Thailand with two away goals that could have been more had Phong's fierce strike not been tipped onto the angle of post and bar by Chonburi keeper Kosin Hathairattanakool.
“We tried our best all over the field,” he said.
“I think we played well. For the second-leg, we'll be at home, we'll have all our fans, and we know we'll have to try to attack.”
