Chonburi lose ground

BANGKOK – AFC Cup 2009 quarter-finalists Chonburi saw their lead at the top of the Thailand Premier League standings reduced to one point after going down 1-0 away to Bangkok Glass on Wednesday.

Nigerian Samuel Ajayi scored the only goal of the game in the 15th minute when the former Phnom Penh Crown striker capitalised on a poor clearance from Thailand international defender Cholratit Jantakam.

Chonburi, who host Vietnam’s Binh Duong in the first leg of the AFC Cup quarter-final in Bangkok on September 15, remain top of the TPL table with 39 points after 16 matches but Muang Thong United moved to within one point of the Shark courtesy of a 2-1 win over Bangkok United.

Yaya Soumahoro (37th) and Teerasil Dangda (77th) were on target for the side that got promoted to Thailand’s top flight after winning the Division One title last season while Suphasek Kaikaew found the net for United early in the second-half.
