BANGKOK – A slick second-half strike from substitute Sutee Suksomkit saw Thailand draw 1-1 with English Premier League side Liverpool in a friendly at the Rajamangala Stadium on Wednesday.
The Singapore-based attacker (pictured celebrating scoring against Iraq at the 2007 Asian Cup) played a neat one-two with Muang Thong United striker Teerasil Dangda to equalise for the Thais in the 72nd minute after Dutchman Ryan Babel had given the visitors a sixth minute lead.
Thailand coach Peter Reid, who spent seven years playing for Liverpool’s arch-rivals Everton, said he was pleased with the performance of the three-time ASEAN champions as the former England international continues his preparations for the Thais’ forthcoming AFC Asian Cup 2011 qualification double-header against Singapore.
"We passed the ball really well and it was great to get a good equaliser," he said.
"Liverpool are a strong team and it was a great experience for the Thailand team to play against them."
The five-time European champions next face Singapore on Sunday with Lions coach Radojko Avramovic also using the friendly to assess his options ahead of the Asian Cup Group E qualifiers.
The ASEAN rivals will meet on November 14 in Singapore before renewing acquaintances in Bangkok four days later.
With two rounds played, Singapore are currently second in Group E with three points, one adrift of leaders Iran, while the Thais have two points, one more than last-place Jordan.
